The Boar
Ceramic
10”x13”
2022
The posture of the sculpture depicts a proud animal, its head lifted and in mid-step as if marching. The boar is a soldier, one of many living in habits they aren't native to. They continue to march leveling the ground behind them.
I created this sculpture partially by accident, attempting to make a completely different figure, but as its shapely snout formed I added its tusks and soon created its body. On the surface, the pig is often portrayed as unclean, messy, and overbearing. The boar, a wild feral pig, is commonly seen as a nuisance and invasive species in many parts of the world. I decided to keep this sculpture completely white to preserve the raw texture of the clay. The white cleanliness of this sculpture is the inverse of its stereotype.
